Seven Steps to Manhattan

It seems there were certain steps to understanding the city. Some say the seven steps refer to the stairs leading to the Rockette’s stage at Rockefeller Center. There are other religious and mystical meanings. Hope was one optimistic thought. There were also the expected admonitions too. The song titles on the Miles Davis album titled “Seven Steps To Heaven,” have names like “I Fall In Love Too Easily” (which can happen when you first see NYC). Another is “So Near, So Far” which can easily apply to one’s aspirations.

But personally there are at least seven events all associated with the new paintings all about New York City. A One-man show in Paris at Galerie Taménaga. Tokyo/Osaka Japan exhibits with Galerie Taménaga. A mural at the Katonah Art Museum, NY (now destroyed), a 200-foot mural installation in the Caribbean, an exhibit at a German Museum in Aschaffenberg, and shows in Karlsruhe, Frankfurt and Art Miami with Galerie Barbara von Stechow.

Caribbean: Fall 2023

Mural in the lobby of the Puerto Rico International AirportAfter the hurricane hit the island of Puerto Rico, the original development and performance site at Paseo Caribe closed. The Open Studios on the Plaza also were closed and shuttered. El Mercado, where Tom Christopher’s murals where showcased, also had to close.  It was the twin disasters of a hurricane and Covid within a brief time. It’s wonderful to see the murals have been preserved and are being installed in their new setting at the International Airport where they will now be seen by millions.
