New York Exhibition Opens – Is the City Ready?

Laverdin Gallery, 445 Park Avenue, becomes one of the first to break the silence with “Life Before A Pandemic”, an exhibition of Tom Christopher’s expressionist paintings of the city’s not-too-distant past. The paintings explode with his classic energy, the NYC we love (and sometimes loath) – bustling bikers, rushing taxis, and, of course, streets filled with people and stories.

Tom Christopher debuts new NYC painting to inspire hope – and test NYC’s post-pandemic appetite

The art world has gone into hiding, just like much of the city. Although Manhattan is crawling back to life (with half-filled offices laden with face masks, rules, and ghosts of those in the Hamptons), most of the art world is holding their assets behind sheets of plywood.

Like much of the bizarre and often tragic recent events, nothing is normal in this reopening exhibit. Socially distant viewers will look at new paintings, shrouded in masks.

Yet, as the saying goes, “Don’t bet against NY.” Christopher aims to offer paintings full of NYC can-do-optimism. And optimism is something the city never loses its appetite for.

June 26 through September 30.
