The Working Men and Women of New York City
Impressed by the resilience and American courage to keep going, no matter what. The everyday workers: the traffic cop, a cake decorator lady in Grand Central, street cleaning guy, bike messenger, a woman leaning against a building filling out a job application, a janitor cleaning windows of a building for rent, the Sabrett cart guy, do just that; soldier on.
Working in an empty city after a pandemic, riots, boarded up buildings, looting, suffering through the worst mayor ever.
As the old saw says: Don’t bet against New York.
Artist Tom Christopher has been documenting New York City’s vibrant and bustling culture for most of his adult life. After the pandemic shut down large sections of New York’s cultural and economic centers, Tom headed back into the city to record the essential workers who keep the city functioning. His sketches are a testament to New York’s resilience and toughness as well as a tribute to the unsung people who serve us all.
